Network Rail is responsible for managing and maintaining hundreds of CERD assets across England and Wales. Network Rail manages and maintains numerous CERD assets throughout England and Wales. Focusing specifically on the rail route in Wales, this project involved conducting assessment reports at 69 locations.

Utilising AssetCoast® to produce comprehensive reports
Condition assessment reports for CERD assets such as sea walls, breakwaters and revetments form a vital part of identifying and assessing the risks posed by coastal processes. Working collaboratively to ensure assessments could be completed safely, this project saw us plan, manage and undertake visual examinations of 69 assets to produce condition assessment reports for each.
Undertaking the visual examinations of the 69 assets meant walking the length of each one to record any visible defects. This data was then recorded using AssetCoast®, a JBA-developed software tool which identifies the physical condition of assets, plus the wider risks posed by coastal processes such as coastal erosion, wave overtopping and still water level flooding.

Working collaboratively to overcome safety challenges
Planning and undertaking these assessments posed a number of challenges - conducting the work safely being the most significant. Where track access was required, this involved working alongside an appointed sub-contractor to put in place the necessary safety measures to allow track work to proceed safely, whilst also limiting disruption to the network.
Whilst the line blocks allowed the inspection team to freely walk along the track to examine assets, this too posed a number of challenges. The signaller in charge of each stretch of track decides how much time we're allocated before allowing trains to pass. This required us to follow a process of moving to safety when necessary, before returning to the track to complete the assessment.
